The firmware of your device can be updated to improve the flying stability and provide additional features. Therefore, you should update the firmware regularly. However, have you ever faced Phantom 3 firmware update problems?
If you’re experiencing any problems with your Phantom 3 firmware, there are some potential solutions to consider. Following these tips can help improve your situation and avoid potential problems down the line.
Troubleshooting Phantom 3 Firmware Update Errors
1. Low Battery
It can take a long time to upgrade, especially if many new features are implemented. If the battery dies before the update is completed, it will stop downloading. Make sure the battery has at least 50 percent capacity before updating.
2. Battery Signal Error
Each battery needs to be updated separately, so you’ll need to plug them in and update them individually. A blinking LED 1 and 2 indicates an update is underway. A solid LED 2 and 3 indicate a failed update.
Wait one hour before beginning the update while the battery is being recharged. (Note that the LEDs may not flash usually.) Please contact DJI Support and provide the necessary information if the error message persists.
3. Connection Error
There are many reasons why DJI Assistant 2 or the DJI GO/GO4 app fails to update successfully, including unexpected termination of the app, loss of WiFi connection, and irregular device connection.
- Make sure the WiFi connection is working and that the file was downloaded in its entirety.
- Try a different USB cable to make the connection work again.
- If the update does not succeed and there is no notification within the app, uninstall the app and reinstall it.
- Use a different mobile device to update.
Alternatively, if the update using DJI GO applications continues to fail, try downloading DJI Assistant 2 and connecting it to the drone and remote controller (except Phantom 3 series and Inspire 1).
4. SD Card Error
When you use an SD card to upgrade the firmware of the Phantom 3A/3PRO or the Inspire 1, you must ensure more space is available than 100MB. In addition, the update will fail if the filename or storage location is incorrect and if there are already multiple versions of the firmware stored on the SD card.
Ensure that the SD card has sufficient space available before using it. Additionally, the SD card must be formatted before the update can be applied. Don’t forget to make a copy of the file.
If you want the firmware package for your device, you can download it. You should export the BIN file to your SD card after extracting it. Don’t alter the name of the BIN file or add any more BIN files to the SD Card root directory.
5. Loose Gimbal Flat Cable
The flat gimbal cable may become disconnected if your drone collides inadvertently with an obstruction. This will cause issues with the power supply to the gimbals and operational errors.
Check the cord that connects the flat gimbal. If none of these solutions worked, contact DJI Support so that we can assist you further. We will be happy to help. Next, install the update after unplugging and reconnecting the cable (only for the Phantom 3 series).
7. Checking firmware
Step 1: Turn on your system
Connect the DJI GO app to your mobile device using the USB cable after turning on the drone and remote control.
Step 2: Enter Camera View
The menu button is located in the upper right corner of the screen when you’re in the Camera view.

Ensure that you are using the most recent firmware version by contacting DJI. Check with DJI to see if your drone is compatible with the latest firmware version:

- Inspire 1
- Inspire 1 Pro
- Matrice 100
You are good to go if the number of the most current firmware version discovered on your setup is the same as the number found on the latest firmware. If you are using DroneDeploy, ensure your firmware is updated by installing the latest version.

Force Firmware Reinstall on DJI Phantom 3 Series Drone

How do I update Phantom 3 firmware?
Option 1: Use DJI GO (Phantom 3 Standard or 4K).
- Start the drone and remote.
- Connect to your aircraft’s Wi-Fi network.
- Launch the DJI Go app.
- Tap the prompt that says ‘New firmware update.’
- Connect your phone to your home or business wifi to get online.
- Tap ‘Download Now’ in the DJI Go app.
- A download progress indicator appears.
- Then go to your phone or tablet’s settings screen and switch the wifi network from your home or workplace to the controller’s.
- Reopen DJI go and click ‘Start Upgrade.’
- Please do not turn off your phone or drone while the firmware update is in progress.
- You can restart your drone after the upgrade is complete by hitting the ‘Complete’ option in the DJI GO app.
Option 2: Computer (All Phantom 3 models)
- Download the latest firmware for the Phantom 3 Professional, Advanced, Standard, and 4K from DJI’s download page.
- The .bin file contains firmware. Unzip the file to your desktop.
- Gimbal on Phantom 3 has a microSD card slot.
- Using the included USB cord, connect the Phantom Gimbal to your computer. (You can also remove the SD card and use a card reader instead.)
- Start your Phantom 3 drone.
- You need to copy the .bin file from your desktop to the SD card’s root, which should appear as a storage device on your computer.
- Connect the drone to the computer after copying the file. (Or remove the SD card from the computer and install it in the drone.)
- The drone will now upgrade the firmware using the SD card.bin file. It may take up to 40 minutes, so do not worry. The drone will make sounds, reboot, or behave strangely during the upgrade.
- A gimbal LED will light up once the update has begun.
- Green-to-red flashing: Firmware update.
- Greenlight: Firmware update complete.
- Solid red: Firmware upgrade failed.
The firmware upgrade was completed when the Phantom 3 gimbal’s status LED turned solid green without flashing. A beep every half second means the updated file is being loaded, four beeps in a row means the file is installed, and one beep followed by two short beeps indicates that the update has been completed and the drone can be turned off.
